2 Kings 7:9 (NIV)
9 Then they said to each other, "We're not doing right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves."
"The gospel is only good news if it gets there in time"
-- Carl F. H. Henry
In 2013 more than 1 million villages in our world remain without ever having heard the Good News! In light of this fact, you can see why I have chosen these quotes to challenge us.
The first quote is from the story of the Syrian siege of the city of Samaria. The situation was so bad that people inside Samaria resorted to eating otherwise detestable food and there were even reports of cannibalism. Poverty and starvation gripped everyone, especially 4 outcast lepers who had been banished outside the city gates. Facing imminent death they had decided that they would venture into the camp of the Syrians, who might possibly spare them or render a speedy death. When they arrive inside the Syrian camp, they discover that God had performed a miracle. The Syrians had fled their camp, believing that they themselves were being surrounded and attacked. The Syrians had abandoned their provisions, their wealth, their clothing, even with fresh food remaining on their tables.
The 4 lepers, while feasting on abandoned food and wrapping themselves in expensive clothing, suddenly remembered that their countrymen inside Samaria were starving and dying. They turned to each other realizing their responsibility. "What we are doing is not good." They were exactly right. How could they continue to gorge themselves with food when people were starving just inside the walls of Samaria. These lepers had the "good news" of salvation, miracles and complete deliverance. Would the good news reach the city in time? In this case, it did.
