I am Tau Win, a retired officer from a government position. I and my wife were Buddhist from Shan State. We have four grown children and two grand children. Being Shan Buddhists we were very devout in religious matters. In my years of work I had only come across a few Christians but had no interest in their "creator God" or "Savior". These gods had nothing to do with our lives. Our concern was to try to live a good life, to have a good attitude towards everybody, do our best while on this earth. We sincerely believed that good works will attain merit for our next life.
There was a Christian man from an office nearby who would come and visit me. We had a good relationship so he would open discussions with me about the meaning and purpose of life. We listened but politely refused because we have our own religion which was handed down from our ancestors for hundreds of years. We were not that interested to read the small booklets and leaflets he would give to us.
But one day he brought us a large book, and it was in our native language of Shan. It is rare to see a book in our native language of Shan, we have been taught Burmese in our education and most literature is in Burmese. Anything printed in the Shan language is very rare. I could not contain my excitement and surprise at seeing the Shan Bible for the first time. As an old and educated family, we can speak, read and write in Shan language fluently. I had a great desire to read and study this book!
His wife related that for 3 days, he didn't watch TV or read another journal or newspaper because he was so absorbed in reading his very own Shan Bible. The more I read, the more my own attitude about the Creator God changed. I saw clearly that it was not my own works that could bring me into the next life.
